Problem 1: Nothing Charges at All

This is the most reported converter complaint and the one most likely to have a free fix. The converter needs three things to charge: live 120V input, an intact 12V output path, and a battery connected to it. Break any one and the result looks identical.

Work backward from the battery. Confirm the battery disconnect is closed, then look at the pair of blade fuses on the converter that provide reverse polarity protection, commonly rated somewhere in the 30 to 40 amp range depending on the model. Problem 2: Lights Dim, Flicker, or Pulse

Flickering usually means the 12V system is being fed by something that cannot keep up, and that is more often a connection than the converter. Every corroded terminal, loose lug, and crusty ground strap adds resistance, and resistance shows up as a voltage dip the instant the water pump or furnace fan kicks in.

Clean both battery posts, both cable ends, and the chassis ground point down to bright metal, then retighten properly. A fuse that blows once is an event. A fuse that blows every time is a message. The converter fuses protect against reverse polarity and against a short on the DC side, and they will keep failing until the underlying fault is found.

The two usual causes are a battery reconnected with the polarity reversed, which takes out both fuses instantly, and a short on one of the 12V branch circuits. These units are usually mounted in a cabinet, under a dinette, or behind a panel where people store hoses, tools, and blankets, and the cooling fan needs clear space to work.
